James R. Winkler

JAMES R. WINKLER is a partner in the firm of Winkler, Kurtz & Winkler & Kuhn, LLP, located in Port Jefferson Station, New York and for the past 30 years has concentrated his practice in the area of matrimonial and family law.

Jim received his undergraduate education at the University of Virginia and the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he graduated in 1971 cum laude. A 1976 graduate of Albany Law School of Union University, he worked as a legislative aide to Assemblyman William Burns during his law school tenure and began his career as an associate to former Assemblyman Peter J. Costigan, Esq., later becoming a partner under the firm name of Costigan and Winkler.

Presently, Jim serves on the Board of Directors of the Matrimonial Bar Association of Suffolk County and has previously served as its Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President.

As an active member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, Jim served as the 100th President of the Association. Previously, he held the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Vice President of the Association. Jim has served on the Board of Directors of the Association, as the Chair of the Judicial Screening Committee and as Chair of the Matrimonial and Family Law Committee. He has served on a variety of task forces for the Association and has been the recipient of the annual President's Award and Director's Award. In 2004 he was named "Boss of the Year" by NALS of Suffolk County, the association for legal professionals. Recently, he chaired the Committee on the Future of Indigent Legal Services in the Suffolk County Bar Association.

In addition to his work for the Suffolk County Bar Association, Jim has coordinated programs for the Suffolk Academy of Law in the area of family and real property law. As a member of the New York State Bar Association's Family Law and Real Property Committees, he also serves on the Board of Directors of the New York State Bar Foundation.

Jim is an active member of his local community and served on the Port Jefferson Board of Education from 1990 to 1996. He was elected its President from 1991 to 1996. He was elected President of the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council in 1996 and served in that capacity until 1999. Until recently, he served on the Council's Board of Directors.
