LONG ISLAND INJURY LAWYER

Richard D. Winkler has been a personal injury lawyer for his entire career spanning more than 30 years. When he receives a call that a life-altering accident has occurred, his team aggressively investigates the case and pursues all available benefits for his clients. Rich understands that his clients have a choice when they hire a personal injury lawyer on Long Island - so it’s his goal that everyone who walks into his office becomes a “client for life.”

Winkler is motivated by helping others and developing relationships with clients. He believes that the most important step in a case is the “initial consultation” with the client. The first meetings are handled personally and Rich makes sure that his clients understand the process  and, most important, how the client’s losses are measured.

Richard Winkler’s goal is to give clients 100% of the financial resources to fix their lives. While he focuses on maximizing the damages that an insurance company or corporation pay to his client, his team also pursues temporary benefits such as no-fault wage loss, medical payments, workers compensation and disability benefits. In some cases, clients are eligible for social security disability.

Since 2013, Winkler has the distinction of being named a New York Metro “Super Lawyer” in the area of plaintiff’s personal injury law, an honor bestowed upon less than 5% of attorneys in his field. He is also a life member of the “Million Dollar Advocates Forum” and the “Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum” which is an honor bestowed on attorneys who have recovered multi-million dollar awards for their clients. Rich is a frequent guest lecturer at Touro Law School’s Advanced Trial Advocacy Classes. He is a graduate of the ATLA's Ultimate Trial Advocacy Course which was held at Harvard Law School in 2012. He is a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association of Justice (formerly ATLA). He is also an active member of the Grievance Committee of the Suffolk County Bar Association which investigates attorney misconduct. He has received an Award of Merit from the Suffolk County Bar Association for chairing a task force to review recommendations for promoting “client satisfaction.” Rich was also voted “Boss of the Year” by the Suffolk County Legal Secretaries Association. In 2009, he was selected to judge the Suffolk County Finals of the New York State High School Mock Trial Tournament (following years of having been the coach of the Miller Place High School Mock Trial Team).

Rich is a member of the New York State and California Bars. He was admitted in California after graduating from Southwestern University with his Juris Doctorate in 1981. He was admitted to practice in New York in 1983. He graduated from SUNY Cortland with honors in 1983 with a B.A. in political science.

JAMES R. WINKLER is a partner in the firm of Winkler, Kurtz & Winkler, LLP, located in Port Jefferson Station, New York and for the past 35 years has concentrated his practice in the area of matrimonial and family law.

Costigan, Esq., later becoming a partner under the firm name of Costigan and Winkler.

Jim has been an active member of the legal community having served as the 100th President of the Suffolk County Bar Association. He has also served as President of the Suffolk County Matrimonial Bar Association and has held every position available on the Executive Board of both Associations. Each and year since 2008 Jim has been designated as a “Super Lawyer” in the area of matrimonial and family law by Law and Politics joining only a handful of Long Island attorneys to receive this prestigious designation.

Moreover, Jim has been granted the “AV Preeminent” peer review rating by Martindale Hubbell which is the highest rate achievable in both legal ability and ethical standards.

Although he is a skilled litigator having tried numerous matrimonial and family law matters, Jim emphasizes the importance of settling all matters in these areas in a fair and civilized manner.  An effort is made in every case to fashion an outcome which meets the needs of his clients and their families. In this regard, Jim is a trained mediator who offers,  in appropriate circumstances, mediation services designed for clients who seek to avoid extensive and expensive litigation.

Jim has been an active member of local community and served as President of the Port Jefferson Board of Education and President of the Greater Port Jefferson/Northern Brookhaven Arts Council.
